Japan: Pres. Lee’s Visit a Chance to Resume FTA Talks

8 January 2011

Japan’s Kyodo News agency reports that the Japanese government apparently sees an expected visit to Tokyo by President Lee Myung-bak as a chance to resume stalled talks on a free trade agreement.

Japan’s Minister of State for National Policy, Koichiro Genba, said on Friday that he hopes the two sides can reach an agreement when President Lee travels there this spring.

Minister Genba told reporters at a hotel in downtown Seoul that Korea understands the need for an FTA and that Japan also sees no obstacle to an agreement.

Genba also met with Korean Foreign Minister Kim Sung-hwan on Friday, where he stressed the need to resolve historical issues between the two countries.
