

TFTA

Depuis 2008, des discussions ont cours concernant la possibilité de fusionner les États membres du COMESA, la Communauté de l’Afrique de l’Est (CEA, 5 pays membres) et la Communauté pour le développement de l’Afrique australe (SADC, 14 pays membres). En 2011, des leaders des 26 pays africains membres de ces 3 communautés économiques régionales ont annoncé leur intention de négocier une zone de libre-échange tripartite qui engloberait plus de 600 millions de personnes et dont la valeur des échanges commerciaux est évalué à 1 000 milliards USD. Lors du Deuxième sommet COMESA-CEA-SADC, tenu à Johannesburg en juin 2011, les gouvernements ont adopté les principes, le processus et la feuille de route des négociations d’un tel accord. Le premier cycle de négociations avait eu lieu à Nairobi en décembre 2011.
Cette zone tripartite est considerée comme le premier pas vers une zone de libre-échange continentale africaine ou ZLEC.
